The mission of the Nebraska Friends of Foster Children (NFFC) is to provide for unmet needs and enhance opportunities for foster children in Nebraska. Formed in 1992 out of frustration felt by foster parents and community volunteers, NFFC recognizes that children taken out of their homes and placed in foster homes are in great need of the “extras” in life that are often taken for granted. These extras include educational assistance, school supplies, sport and school activity fees, summer camps and cultural activities that develop growing interests in music, art or dance.
When foster care is needed for children, the Nebraska Health and Human Services (NHHS) attempts to place children and youth in a family setting. NHHS provides a base monthly payment to foster families of approximately $220 per month for food, shelter and clothing. As can be imagined, the cost of “extras” such as band uniforms, football shoes, summer camp and music lessons exceed the monthly stipend. While foster families are traditionally giving in nature, they still may not have the resources available to them to offer their foster child any of the additional “extras” that enhance their quality of life, build character and offer life-changing experiences.
Important Information Regarding Independent Living Grants through Nebraska
Friends of Foster Children. The board of the Nebraska Friends of Foster
Children has decided not to renew the Independent Living Contract with the
Department of Health and Human Services. We are no longer accepting
applications for independent living grants only. We will continue to process
requests made to our Foster Children Grant Program. The department will
announce a new contractor for the independent living grants previously
provided by NFFC. Once the contract is finalized, information on where to
apply will be provided on this site.
